Why We Built Growth Lab — and What’s Coming Next

October 30, 2025

When we created Growth Lab, we weren’t just building another education tool. We were building a place where students could explore, experiment, and grow in ways that traditional classrooms rarely allow. We believe that for students to thrive in the 21st century, education must be both human-centered and future-focused. Students today face a world changing faster than most curricula can keep up with. They’re graduating into careers and challenges we can’t fully predict—yet many still struggle with skills like adaptability, emotional regulation, and communication. Students often understand academic content but lack the confidence or problem-solving strategies to apply it in life. Teachers are overwhelmed, balancing academic demands with growing social-emotional needs in their classrooms. Parents want to support their children’s development but don’t always know how. We saw an opportunity to bridge these gaps.

It began with a simple question:

“What if school could be as engaging as a favorite game—but with real learning at its core?”

We knew that gamification alone wasn’t enough. The platform needed to combine behavioral psychology, social-emotional learning (SEL), and story-driven engagement to help students develop skills they’d use for a lifetime. Growth Lab is built on three main pillars: Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) – Decades of research show SEL improves academic performance, relationships, and long-term success. Behavioral Psychology – Rewarding consistent effort and small wins builds strong habits and lasting confidence. Purposeful Gamification – Avatars, challenges, and rewards that drive intrinsic motivation, not just temporary engagement. This is where our Duffle characters come in—playful, relatable guides who help students navigate challenges and reflect on their growth. Inside Growth Lab, students aren’t just reading or watching—they’re participating. Interactive Lessons: Students learn concepts, apply them immediately, and see the results in-game. Duffle Mentors: Characters offer encouragement, challenges, and feedback. Customizable Worlds: Students personalize their avatars and environment as a reflection of their progress. Real-World Skills: Every lesson ties back to everyday situations—communication, empathy, conflict resolution, and goal setting. Too many platforms use gamification as decoration—badges, leaderboards, points—without connecting them to meaningful growth. In Growth Lab: Points represent effort and persistence. Levels mark mastery of skills, not just completion of tasks. Rewards celebrate behaviors like reflection, kindness, and problem-solving. Students don’t just come back to “play.” They return to improve themselves. We designed Growth Lab to extend into real life. Activities, prompts, and reflections help students carry lessons outside the platform. We’ve seen students: Resolve disagreements more respectfully after practicing conflict resolution in the game. Set personal goals and track them consistently because they want to see in-game progress. Show more empathy after guided activities on perspective-taking. Teachers get a flexible tool that works as a short activity, a full lesson, or independent practice. It aligns with SEL standards and requires no extra planning. Data dashboards track student growth in skills that matter—not just test scores. Parents receive updates that explain what their child is learning and why it’s important, along with simple ways to reinforce lessons at home. This gives families a shared language for talking about emotions, challenges, and successes. Growth Lab is just the beginning. Our long-term vision includes: Expanding content for high school, higher education, and lifelong learning. Partnering globally with schools to bring SEL to underserved communities. Creating hybrid physical-digital spaces for skill-building and collaboration. Our mission is simple: empower students everywhere to be confident, capable, and compassionate. We don’t measure success by how long students stay on our platform—we measure it by what they do after they log off. Growth Lab isn’t designed to keep kids glued to screens; it’s designed to give them tools, perspectives, and confidence to thrive in the real world. We built Growth Lab because education is too important to remain unchanged. Students deserve more than memorization and test prep—they deserve a space to develop the skills that will carry them through life. Whether you’re a teacher, a parent, or a school leader, we invite you to explore Growth Lab. See firsthand how gamified SEL can transform not just how students learn, but how they see themselves.
